Luca Connell’s loan out to Queen’s Park has Celtic fans asking questions

Celtic fans have raised major questions about Luca Connell’s progress after another loan at Queen’s Park was confirmed yesterday.

Connell spent the second half of last season helping the Spiders win promotion to League One. It seemed odd at the time considering he had played with Bolton two years before in the English league.

However, in an even more worrying decision for the player, he had to return to the new League One club for another season. Queen’s Park made the announcement yesterday, stating that he would join for another season.

When he returns to Celtic Park, he will only be left with one year of contract. Suddenly that four-year contract he signed in the summer of 2019 will be almost over. And worryingly, he won’t be any closer to first-team action than he was when he signed.

Ange Postecoglou has always said he will give youngsters a chance if they prove they are good enough. It’s a worrying sign for Connell as he didn’t have a minute of senior action.

Luca Connell’s development path is more of a concern than lack of playing time

Many fans will say Connell should get minutes. That Ismaila Soro hasn’t been good enough and the young Irishman has proven he can take the step. Obviously, however, Postecoglou doesn’t think so.

What is even more concerning, however, is Connell’s career trajectory. He was supposed to sign for Celtic and reach new heights. After all, he had just managed to rack up 12 senior appearances with Bolton in the league and FA Cup. He had had a taste of high quality senior football and seemed ready to play in Glasgow.

Fast forward two years and he returns to a League One club with no indication that he has a long-term Celtic future. When it comes to commenting on the club’s top youngsters, Postecoglou hasn’t really moved to mention the U21 international from the Republic of Ireland.

This is not what was presented to Connell when he arrived. We can’t pretend this was the direction his career was meant to go.

And it’s clear Celtic fans have had major questions about his return to Queen’s. Here’s a look at the fan reaction yesterday:
