Funding Safer Streets projects on executive’s agenda

Community Safety

October 06, 2022

The North Northamptonshire Council executive will meet next week to discuss how nearly £550,000 of Home Office Safer Streets funding should be spent to make two areas of North Northants safer and better places to live.

The funding will be used for a range of community safety improvements on the Queensway estate in Wellingborough and in the All Saints area of Kettering – two areas which have been identified as ‘left behind’ in the central government’s Leveling Up white paper .

In both areas, the funding will help control access to alleyways where anti-social behavior and crime cause problems for local residents, as well as plans to expand CCTV networks. It is also proposed that work be completed to provide and improve community facilities, such as outdoor gym equipment on the Queensway, to divert young people from crime.

Both areas that these projects focus on suffer from disproportionate levels of crime and anti-social behavior and funding would make a real difference to communities. If the report is accepted at next week’s executive, projects can begin and residents should begin to see noticeable differences between the Queensway estate in Wellingborough and the All Saints neighborhood of Kettering. Throughout the projects, we plan to work with residents and owners to ensure that the work carried out meets the needs of the communities.Cllr Matt Binley, Board Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Leveling

I look forward to discussing this report with members of Parliament. Improving local areas is a key priority for us as a council and if approved the council team will work with partners including the Northamptonshire Police and Fire Crimes Commissioner’s Office and Greatwell Homes, to implement improvements.Cllr Jason Smithers, Head of Council

Funding for these projects was granted by the central government.

The executive will meet on Thursday 13th October from 10am at the Corby Cube and the full agenda is available online.
